(30 Things To Stop Spending Time On If You Want to Be Successful #8)
“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”
Most people in the world work for the sake of working. Very few people work to get something accomplished. The former rarely ever see their dreams become reality and never get the chance to live the life they want to live. The latter work to make their dreams happen and fight to reach their goals. They not only live the life they want to live, but they are happy about it. Their happiness is a result of their willingness to not just get through the day, but to grow through the day.
Successful people are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals including work — very hard work. They do not just work to get their eight hours in. They have a driven eagerness to get things done. They focus on the right tasks and do them well in order to be the most effective and productive. Some might say they are greedy, hungry, or self-centered in a way. But they are really not. What appears to be greed and selfishness is really serious desire to do what they were made to do.
Many people go to work every day, yet few do the things necessary to succeed. Many people want to prosper in terms of money, power, and material possessions, but few want to do what it takes to gain those things. A mentality of working for the sake of working is not a position through which you will prosper. The harder you work for something that you really want, the greater you will feel when you finally get it.
Steve Jobs said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”
If you are a normal person, you are going to fill much of your time with work. It is better to do something that makes you feel fulfilled and helps you reach your goals than to do something that is boring and you can’t wait to get away from. Many people work 9 to 5 jobs that they hate, but refuse to do anything about. The only way to be fulfilled at something is to love what you do. When you love what you do, the fun will come from doing it and being around it every day.
Unsuccessful people approach work with a self-defeating, limited mindset. They think of work and talk about work in a negative way. They dismiss work like a rebellious teenager they want to kick out of the house. They don’t enjoy work and so work does not reward them with the things they want like satisfaction, significance, fulfillment, and material possessions. Working for the sake of working is not work at all; it is drudgery. Using phrases such as “the daily grind” or “thank God it’s Friday” is a reflection of your attitude towards work.
To complain about work instead of using it as a means to an end is counterproductive. Work is not a curse; it can be used to create a life of abundance and give you the ability to help others do the same. Your passion for work will lead you to love waking up each morning to reach your goals. Your creativity and innovation of work will help you to make your dreams a reality. Your contribution to work will help inspire others and keep you on the cutting edge by being in a position to always learn. Loving your work is what makes dreams become reality.
“I’ve always been a big proponent of not working for the sake of working, because I don’t want to work for the rest of my life — I want to live.”
— Mila Kunis
