The Day After Thanksgiving (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 330)

1 Chronicles 16:34 (NLT)
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.

With Thanksgiving behind us, it is easy to think less and less about the many things we have to be thankful for. The holiday of Thanksgiving peaks our interest because it is a day set aside especially and specifically for that reason. But when the day is over, the thanks should still be there even as many people rush stores and wait in long lines to gather up more stuff hours after they just through being thankful for what they already have.

The day after Thanksgiving and the many days until the next one comes around give us plenty of reasons and opportunities to give thanks. Scripture tells us to give thanks to the Lord because he is good. God is good every day of the year, all throughout the day. He cares about us, loves us, protects us, and answers us when we call. God’s goodness each day deserves our daily thanks and appreciation. God doesn’t have to be good. He could be like we are to him — sometimes good and sometimes completely off the goodness scale. But God cannot be anything else but good to us and it is wonderful that we get to serve a God like that.

Scripture also tells us that God’s love for us endures forever. It isn’t based upon performance or merit. It also isn’t fickle and fair-weathered like some people. God’s love remains the same through sunshine and rain, good days and bad days, sickness and health, from the day we were born to the day we die and all throughout eternity. If you think you have nothing else for which to give thanks, remember that the love of God is always abounding toward you. It never runs out or runs away; it doesn’t leave or break hearts. It lasts from everlasting to everlasting and we can be thankful every day for that.

In all circumstances, God is good and he loves you. He will never cease to be good and will never stop loving you. Both of these are two reasons we all have to commit to living a life of thanksgiving and genuine appreciation for all the blessings we have — not just on one day, but every moment of every single day we get to live. God wants us to experience a life of fulfillment, joy, and true appreciation for what he is always doing for us — being good and loving us. God is glorified when we express our thanks to him every day of the year.

“We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things?”
— Dietrich Bonhoeffer
