We have a tendency to do the easiest things first or to make pleasure our first priority. “I’ll have fun today, but tomorrow I’ll get down to work on my goals” is a common excuse. This is only okay to do in some very rare cases when one is disciplined and practices self-control in every area of life. But, for most of us, if we’re honest, it’s very hard to stop doing enjoyable activities and tackle the more uncomfortable tasks.
Getting to more entertaining things has a self-defeating effect on us if we have not first worked for it. Such activities are not as enjoyable as we thought they would be simply because we have not engaged in anything more difficult beforehand. Things we love to do or enjoy doing keep us in our comfort zone. It is the things we find difficult but necessary that push us forward and urge us to climb higher.
When we put off until tomorrow the arduous endeavors that could very well be done today, over time, procrastination becomes a fixed bad habit. Once a bad habit takes form, it can be insanely hard to break. Having fun today is a lame excuse for waiting to focus on goals tomorrow. Do the hard work that pushes you out of your comfort zone and make progress on your goals so you can have fun tomorrow. Play is important, but play before work is backwards.
Work toward your goals in such a way that at the end of the day, you feel satisfied and fulfilled on the inside. When you earn your vacation, your diet break, your dessert, believe me, you will feel better all the way around. The ability to leave your comfort zone and focus on reaching your goals is what separates high achievers from average people. Step outside your comfort zone. Let it scare you. It is worth it.
